What a four-year wait for this game that some have accused of being just a pipe dream from its Chinese developer Gamescience! Black Myth Wukong was announced in 2020 and many thought it was impossible to release, and here it is in 2024 and achieving unprecedented success, as one of the best-selling games in history, despite being the first game for this developer ever, so did it deserve all this success? We answer all this and more in our review and evaluation of Black Myth Wukong, so let’s not waste any more time!

The story of the game without burning

The story of the game revolves around the monkeys of Mount Huaguo who send disciples trying to retrieve the power of the legendary monkey “San Wukong” who is trying to gain his power distributed over 6 artifacts scattered in different regions of China, and during your journey you try to prove that you are the person who is destined to carry these distinctive combat and magical abilities, and this person is referred to as The Destined One.

Throughout the events of the game, it is indicated that many monkeys have embarked on a journey to search for the trace of “San Wukong, the Monkey King” but they failed, and you are the one who is responsible for fulfilling this prophecy. The story is based on a famous Chinese novel from the seventeenth century, called Journy To The West, which is essentially about patience, wisdom, and the pursuit of knowledge.

The game has several side characters and some freedom to change the context and events of the original novel, which I found excellent to contradict the expectations that we may build based on our knowledge of the novel.

• The game offers a linear experience full of fighting, resource gathering, and development. The development system is stage-based, meaning that no matter how many times you die, you will keep the points you have collected and you can buy abilities from the skill trees available in its various branches.
• Fighting in the game is done with one weapon, which can be developed later, which is the stick. There is no blocking of blows, only dodging.
• The game also offers magical abilities, including an ability that allows you to clone yourself, an ability that allows you to freeze enemies, and other abilities that are all distinctive (more on that in the positives section).
• The game offers about 91 bosses between the side and the main, all of which offer a different design from each other, and give the player the feeling that he is inside a new epic anime episode with each fight.
